"What an absolute thrill to receive First Prize at the Australian Sheep & Wool Show again this year, in the Fashion Garment Class. Also, my entry was chosen to be shown daily in the Fashion Parade." Sue
2 years in the making, In the Style of a Ruana, again showcased my love of Estonian Lace knitting.
For many months the design rolled around in my mind, finally picturing the finished garment over a 1950's/1960's inspired dress.
The motifs used are 2 variations of "Lily of the Valley".
The Ruana is made from exquisite super fine merino (16.2 micron) purchased direct from Floyd Legge, the farmer in Forbes NSW. Most of the processing of the wool from sheep to yarn was performed in Australia. Unfortunately, Australia does not have mills that can spin such super fine weight of yarn - 2/60. A little like sewing thread.
The yarn was then dyed by Simone Cross, Gumblossom Yarns, with copper. Hence the amazing grey/green colour. Also, Simone was the maker of the stunning dress.
The black dress was made using the same fleece and yarn - material that Floyd had made for his wedding suit. The yarn was processed into fabric and dyed in Geelong, Victoria.
Finished weight of the Ruana is 123gm; the lace edging was knitted separately and hand sewn on 1,120 stitches. Each stitch on the cast on edge was neatened after blocking.
The dress and the Ruana are available to purchase. This is a one off garment.
